EVENT SUMMARY

More than 200 people attended our event. At the height of our evening, our guests were sending more than 600 tweets reaching almost 900,000 people. A huge thanks also to all of you who donated to the Bert Lozano Scholarship. We surpassed our goal by raising $5,150! Bert’s family was touched and honored by the naming of the scholarship in Bert’s name.

Jose Carreon
Inaugural Bert Lozano Scholarship

Jose is a sophomore at El Centro where he is a student leader on campus. He produces videos for peer mentoring and founded the El Centro College Film Society. Jose plans to study Radio/TV/Film at the University of Texas.

Karen Gavis
NBC 5 & Telemundo Scholarship

Karen will attend the University of Texas at Arlington as a senior next fall. She has served as editor for the Tarrant County College College paper, The Collegian and Texas Christian University’s new site the109.org.

Maria Lempke
Dr. Elba Garcia Scholarship

Maria is a senior at Frisco’s Wakeland High School. She is president and senior producer of Wakeland’s TV program as well as producer and editor for the districtwide Frisco’s ISD TV. Maria plans to attend the University of North Texas.

Elvia Limon
Mary Kay Scholarship

Elvia is a graduate student at UNT where she is a vice president of the campus NAHJ chapter. She also is a teaching assistant for the Mayborn School of Journalism. Elvia has written for the North Texas Daily.

Christian Schneider
Domingo Garcia Scholarship

Christian is a senior at McKinney High School. He is a producer for the school’s news program MHS1. Christiaan plans to pursue a career in broadcast journalism at the University of Texas.

Jessica Amador
Time Warner Cable Scholarship

Jessica is a junior at the University of Texas at Arlington, and is majoring in public relations. She reports for The Shorthorn newspaper and is involved with groups like the UTA DREAM Factory and LULAC. She previously interned with the Dallas Bar Association.

Madeline Peña
Lowes Construction Scholarship

Madeline, a sophomore at Texas Christian University, is majoring in strategic communications. She is an associate editor at The Skiffx360, vice president of the school’s student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and serves as a peer mentor.

Daniel Jose Litwin
Barson Utilities Scholarship

Daniel is a freshman at the University of Missouri Walter Williams School of Journalism. He is currently a Delta Chi associate member and member of Mizzou Forte, an a cappella choir. Daniel is a graduate of McKinney Boyd High School.
